Graphics Issues
Repair of: Frogger(Konami (Sega license) 1981)
Repair Type: PCB
Status: Fixed
Contributed by: Arcadenut
Symptom:
Screen shows graphics issues.  GGE in "FROGGER" on title screen is corrupt.

Solution:

Diagnostic/Repair Steps

The following steps were taken to either diagnose or to repair the PCB/Part/Game:
Pulled Graphics EPROMs
12/10/2014 6:49:14 PM
Pulled the 2716's from IC101 and IC102 on the main CPU board and verified.  One EPROM did not verify.  Will burn new EPROM and update after that.
Reprogrammed Graphics EPROM
12/12/2014 7:50:09 PM
Repogrammed them and still no luck.  The EPROM (IC101) was bad, but that wasn't the issue here.  It might have only been off by a byte or two, which probably wouldn't have been noticeable.

Stranger issue showed up now.  The Text now has different colors going through it rather then being a solid color.

Time to start with the Manual diagnostics.  The Frogger Manual actually has a pretty nice troubleshooting section in it.
Graphics Glitches Fixed
12/13/2014 5:19:50 PM
Replaced the 2114 RAM at IC85 and IC86 (replaced both, the one at IC85 broke when I pulled it out, so I'm suspecting that was the bad one), replaced them both just for the hell of it.
Color Issue still exists
12/13/2014 5:21:58 PM
You can see that the GGE is now correct, but if you look at the text, it is multi-color.  The text should be one color.  Seems to only affect the Bottom couple of lines of the text, never the top or middle.

Looking for more Physical issues
12/31/2014 3:31:32 PM
Started looking for more physical issues with the board and noticed that IC43 has a couple of pins that have been repaired.
Pulled IC43
12/31/2014 3:32:53 PM
I pulled IC43 and replaced it with one from a donor board.  As you can see, the repaired legs are still left... why they didn't just replace it... who knows?  Probably didn't have a spare part on hand.
Ooopps...
12/31/2014 3:49:48 PM
Ok, so I started reading over this repair log and had a thought... the color issue didn't show up until after I swapped out the original ROMS at IC101 and IC102... since the RAM fixed the Graphics issue, maybe I programmed the wrong versions of IC101 and IC102....

Sure enough, I put the original EPROMS in IC101 and IC102 and the color issue disappeared...  Problem solved.
